A few decades ago the Egyptian government distributed land in the Behera Governorate among fresh graduates and other beneficiaries in an effort to establish new communities. Agricultural cooperatives were formed in each village and registered with the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture. Each cooperative has an elected board of directors and all activities are monitored by the general assembly. A marketing cooperative was also established and registered with the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture.
The "Premium Project" started in Behera & Mersa Matrouh Governorates (north of Egypt) in direct coordination with West Nobaria Rural Development Project (WNRDP).
Based on registered information, the total number of small growers in the five cooperatives is 4,006 growers with land ownership ranging between 2 -5 feddans per grower.
The following chart demonstrates the names of the participating cooperatives.
